What is a good typing speed (WPM)?
Around 40 WPM is average for an adult, 60โ70 WPM is genuinely good, and 80 WPM or more is professional. Most office and administrative jobs ask for 40โ50 WPM at 90% accuracy or better; data-entry and transcription roles usually want 60โ80. Speed below roughly 30 WPM is where typing still gets in the way of thinking.
| Level | Net WPM | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Under 30 | Still hunting for keys; typing interrupts thinking |
| Average | 35โ45 | The figure most often quoted for adults |
| Above average | 50โ65 | Comfortable for admin, support and writing work |
| Fast | 70โ90 | Meets data-entry and transcription requirements |
| Professional | 90โ120 | Touch typing at speed with high accuracy |
| Elite | 120+ | Competitive typists; the record is 212 WPM |
How is WPM calculated?
Net WPM = (correct characters รท 5) รท minutes elapsed. One โwordโ is a fixed five characters, spaces and punctuation included, which is why a 300-character passage counts as 60 words regardless of how long its real words are. Gross WPM counts everything you typed; net WPM subtracts the errors you left uncorrected, and net is the figure employers and exams mean. Accuracy is a separate number: correct keystrokes รท total keystrokes ร 100.
How to type faster
Stop looking at the keyboard, hold 95% accuracy before you chase speed, and practise 15โ20 minutes a day rather than an hour once a week. Errors cost more than slow keystrokes do: every backspace is two wasted keystrokes plus the pause that finds it. Most people learn the key positions in one to two weeks, dip below their old speed for three to six weeks while the habit rewires, then reach a comfortable 50โ60 WPM within two to three months.

Pick a test length and difficulty, then type the passage shown on screen. We measure your speed and accuracy as you type, and at the end you get a full breakdown โ WPM, accuracy, consistency and your weakest keys โ to guide practice.
WPM stands for Words Per Minute, the standard unit for typing speed. By convention, one "word" equals 5 characters (including spaces) โ so typing 300 characters in a minute works out to roughly 60 WPM.
WPM = (characters typed รท 5) รท time in minutes, adjusted for errors. We report net WPM โ correct characters only, with a penalty for uncorrected mistakes โ the same method used by most professional and government typing tests, so your score here reflects what you'd get on a real exam.
It depends on what you're using it for, but as a rough guide: ~40 WPM is a solid everyday speed, 50โ70 WPM is strong for most school and office work, and 80+ WPM is fast, typically seen in experienced typists, writers and programmers.
Yes โ 40 WPM is a reasonable everyday speed and a solid starting point for beginners. If you're typing for a specific job or exam, check that role's exact WPM requirement, since standards vary a lot by position.
Yes. 60 WPM with good accuracy is considered a strong, efficient typing speed for the large majority of office and professional tasks.
Yes โ 80 WPM is fast by everyday standards and shows strong keyboard fluency, especially if accuracy stays high. Competitive typists can go well beyond this, but 80+ WPM comfortably covers nearly any job or exam requirement you'll encounter.
Accuracy is the percentage of characters you type correctly. A high WPM with lots of mistakes doesn't reflect efficient typing โ errors cost you more time than typing a little slower would. Aim to keep accuracy at 95%+ as your baseline, and let speed grow from there.
WPM uses a standardized 5-character "word". CPM (characters per minute) counts raw characters directly. As a rough conversion, 300 CPM โ 60 WPM. CPM is especially useful for scripts like Hindi where word-boundary counting is less standard.
Accuracy first, always. Typing fast with frequent mistakes lowers your effective (net) WPM and reinforces bad muscle memory. Once accurate finger movement becomes automatic, speed increases naturally without sacrificing correctness.
Practice consistently in short daily sessions, learn proper touch typing and finger placement, stop looking at the keyboard, use AI lessons to drill your specific weak keys instead of generic text, and track your WPM and accuracy trend over time.
A 1-minute test is great for a quick speed check. 3-, 5- or 10-minute tests give a more reliable read on how consistently you can hold your speed, which matters more for exam prep. We offer durations from 15 seconds to 10 minutes so you can match the test to your goal.
With 15โ30 minutes of practice a day, most people learn every key position in one to two weeks, get back to their old speed in three to six weeks and reach 50โ60 WPM in two to three months. A short slowdown at the start is normal.
Most office jobs that state a requirement ask for 35โ50 WPM with 95%+ accuracy. Admin assistants and support agents are typically 45โ60 WPM, data entry and live chat 50โ70 WPM, and transcription 65โ80+ WPM โ whether you're in the US, UK, Canada or Australia, the job advert is the final word.
Yes โ every test works on phones and tablets. Expect a lower score than on a keyboard: a 2019 study of 37,000+ volunteers found phone typists averaged about 38 WPM. For a job-ready number, test on a physical keyboard.
Absolutely. If you're new to typing, focus on accuracy and correct finger placement first rather than chasing a high WPM right away โ our Typing Test for Beginners uses simpler passages to build that foundation.
Yes. We have dedicated practice tests for SSC CHSL, SSC CGL, RRB NTPC, LDC, court typing and general data entry, formatted to match real exam timing and passage style. Exact WPM, accuracy and error rules vary by exam, so always confirm the specific requirement in your official notification.
