What this test measures

Every run tracks three numbers, not just one: WPM (how fast), accuracy (how clean), and consistency (how steady your pace was). A results screen with only a speed number hides the trade-off between typing fast and typing correctly — this one does not.

How the score is calculated

  • Net WPM = (correctly typed characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. Five characters is the standard definition of one “word”, regardless of the actual words in the passage.
  • Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ total keystrokes × 100.
  • Consistency is derived from how much your speed varied second to second — a smooth, even pace scores higher than one full of stops and bursts, even at the same average WPM.

Frequently Asked Questions

Speed is shown in words per minute (WPM), where one word equals five characters. We count only correctly typed characters, so errors lower your score.

A 60-second test is the standard used by most typing benchmarks. Shorter 15s and 30s runs are good for quick warm-ups; longer runs give a more stable average.

The average adult types around 40 WPM. 60–70 WPM is comfortably above average, and professional typists usually sit between 80 and 100 WPM.

Passage difficulty, warm-up, and even time of day all shift your result by a few WPM. Take the middle score of three runs for a reliable number, and compare against your own history rather than a single test.
