Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for

This test runs entirely in the browser. There is no download, no extension, no trial, and no account gate in front of the result. Click into the passage and start typing — the timer begins on your first keystroke, not on a button.

That is a deliberate design choice rather than a limitation. The single most common complaint about typing sites is being made to register before seeing a score you have already earned. An account here is optional and only adds things an account genuinely needs: saved history, progress charts, streaks and personalised practice.

What happens to what you type

If you are signed out, nothing leaves your browser. The passage, your keystrokes and your score are all handled on your own device and are gone when you close the tab. There is no analytics script, no advertising pixel and no third-party tracker on this site at all — the full inventory of what is stored locally is on the cookies page.

If you are signed in, your result is saved to your account so it can appear in your history and charts. That is the only thing that changes.

Where it works

DeviceHow it behaves
Desktop / laptopFull experience. This is what the score is calibrated for.
ChromebookWorks fully. Common in schools, and nothing needs installing on a managed device.
Tablet with a keyboard caseWorks well. Slightly cramped key spacing usually costs a few WPM.
Phone / on-screen keyboardWorks, and produces a valid score for that keyboard — but it is not comparable to a physical-keyboard result.

A note for anyone testing on a phone: autocorrect and predictive text will interfere with a typing test, because they alter characters you did not type. Turn them off before you take it seriously, or the accuracy figure is measuring your keyboard app rather than you.

Working offline

The site is a progressive web app, so once a page has loaded, a service worker keeps it cached. The core test keeps working without a connection — useful on a train, on school or office networks that block a lot, or anywhere with unreliable signal. Saving a result to an account is the one part that needs you online; it will simply not save if you are not.

You can also install it properly, so it opens in its own window and appears alongside your other apps, without an app store being involved.

Browser typing tests and blocked networks

School and workplace networks frequently block software installation and filter categories of site. A browser-based typing test avoids the first problem entirely, and because this one is a plain educational tool with no ads, no chat and no user-uploaded content, it tends to pass filters that block games. Teachers wanting structured practice should look at the typing practice page and the typing games, which are all browser-based on the same basis.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The test works fully as a guest. An optional free account only adds history and progress tracking across sessions.

Yes, though a physical keyboard gives the most accurate reading. On a phone the on-screen keyboard will still register a valid score.

Results are only saved if you are signed in. As a guest, everything stays in your browser for the duration of the session.
