UK vs US Keyboard Layout: Why Your Score Drops (and How to Fix It)
Your typing score drops on an unfamiliar layout because UK (ISO) and US (ANSI) keyboards put @, ", £, # and the Enter key in different places. Every email address and quotation then costs an error or a pause. The fix is to practise for a few days on the layout you will be tested on.

| @ and " | Swapped: UK Shift+' = @, US Shift+2 = @ |
|---|---|
| £ | UK Shift+3; not on US keyboards |
| # | UK has its own key by Enter; US Shift+3 |
| Enter | UK tall L-shape; US wide single row |
| Fix | Practise on the test layout for 3–5 days |
What moves
| Key | UK (ISO) | US (ANSI) |
|---|---|---|
| @ | Shift + ' | Shift + 2 |
| " | Shift + 2 | Shift + ' |
| £ | Shift + 3 | Not available |
| # | Own key next to Enter | Shift + 3 |
| Enter | Tall, L-shaped | Wide, one row |
| \ | Extra key by short left Shift | Above Enter |
Why it costs so much
Touch typists rely on muscle memory. When a key moves, your finger goes to the old place — an error — or you hesitate — a pause. A passage with a few quotes and an email address can cost 3–5 WPM. The Enter key catches people too: on a US keyboard the little finger reaches for an Enter that isn’t there.
Which countries use which
- UK and Ireland: ISO UK layout.
- US, Canada (English), Australia and New Zealand: US layout.
- Quebec and bilingual offices: Canadian French or CSA.
How to fix it before a test
- Ask what keyboard the test machine has, or assume the local layout.
- Switch your own computer to that layout for three to five days.
- Practise on the punctuation typing test and the local country test — UK or US.
- Check keys work with the keyboard test.

How big is the effect?
It depends on the text. Plain prose with few symbols barely changes. A passage with quotations, email addresses, currency and hash signs can cost several WPM and add errors — exactly the kind of text business typing tests use.
Fixing a mismatch on your own computer
- Windows: Settings → Time & language → Language & region → your language → Keyboard; add English (United Kingdom) or United States.
- macOS: System Settings → Keyboard → Text Input → Edit; add British or U.S.
- If your keyboard types @ when you press Shift+2 on a UK keyboard, the computer is set to US — or the reverse.
Layouts by country
| Country | Layout |
|---|---|
| United Kingdom | UK (ISO) |
| Ireland | UK/Irish (ISO) |
| United States | US (ANSI) |
| Canada (English) | US, sometimes CSA |
| Australia, New Zealand | US (ANSI) |
Spelling is a second mismatch
Moving between countries also changes spelling: colour/color, organise/organize, centre/center. On a copy test that is not a problem — you type what you see — but on audio typing it is. Practise on the local spelling.
A 15-minute daily routine
Short, focused practice every day beats long sessions once a week. This routine fits most goals.
- 2 minutes — warm-up: easy text at a relaxed pace.
- 5 minutes — accuracy: an AI lesson on your weak keys at 97%+ accuracy.
- 3 minutes — speed: three 30-second bursts slightly faster than comfortable.
- 5 minutes — test: one run at the length of the test you are preparing for.
Log the middle score of the week, not the best one; that is the number you will reproduce on test day. If it hasn’t moved in three weeks, change what you work on, not how long — see the 30-day plan.
