Typing Speed Requirements for Admin Jobs in New Zealand
New Zealand admin and office support roles commonly look for around 40–55 WPM, with personal assistants and medical typists higher. There is no national standard; recruitment agencies and employers run short online typing and data-entry exercises for shortlisted applicants.

How NZ employers test
Most testing happens through recruitment agencies, with an online typing test and a data-entry exercise when you register or are shortlisted. Public sector employers describe any test in the position description on NZ Government Jobs.
Typical speeds
- Reception and office support: 35–45 WPM.
- Administrator: 40–55 WPM.
- PA and team support: 50–60 WPM.
- Medical typist or transcriptionist: 50–60+ WPM from audio.
Preparing
- Practise on NZ text — the New Zealand typing test uses local spelling and place names.
- Do a data-entry run on the data entry test.
- Remember NZ keyboards are US layout — @ and " are not where UK keyboards put them.
On your CV
Write “Typing: 55 WPM, 97% accuracy”. Recruiters usually re-test, so quote a speed you can reproduce.
Typical NZ admin tests
| Test | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Typing | A short timed copy test, scored on WPM and accuracy |
| Data entry | Copying records into a form or spreadsheet |
| Office software | Word and Excel tasks |
| Written task | An email or letter, judged on clarity and spelling |
Te reo Māori in office text
Everyday NZ correspondence often includes te reo Māori greetings and names with macrons — Kia ora, Ngā mihi, Māori, Tāmaki Makaurau. Enable the Māori keyboard in your operating system to type macrons quickly. Copy tests may include them; getting them right shows attention to detail.
Public sector roles
Ministries, councils and health entities recruit separately on NZ Government Jobs and their own sites. Read the position description for “key skills”; if typing speed is listed, expect a test.
Raising your speed
Many office workers can add around 10 WPM in a month of daily practice — see from 40 to 60 WPM and the NZ typing tests hub.
Before any employer or exam typing test
Five questions decide how you should prepare, so get the answers before test day. Most can be found in the job posting, the candidate information pack, or by asking the recruiter.
- How long is the test? One minute rewards a fast start; five or ten minutes rewards endurance.
- How are errors counted? Per word, per character, subtracted from WPM, or capped (for example 3 errors in 5 minutes).
- Can you use Backspace? Some platforms disable it.
- What is the content? Prose, numbers, forms, or audio.
- What keyboard? UK ISO or US ANSI — and whether there is a numeric keypad.
| Method | Used by | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Gross WPM | Some agency reports | 50 |
| Net WPM (errors per minute deducted) | Most employers | 49 |
| Adjusted WPM (WPM − errors) | Criteria-style tests | 45 |
| Error cap (≤ 3 errors) | US federal standard | Fail — 5 errors |
| Canadian table (2 errors/min at 45–54 WPM) | Canadian 5-minute test | Pass — 10 allowed |
Find the preset that matches your test on the requirements table, or use the requirement checker to compare your best score with the job.
