What Is a Good 10-Key Speed? KPH Benchmarks for Data Entry

A good 10-key speed for most data-entry jobs is around 10,000–12,000 keystrokes per hour at high accuracy. Around 8,000 KPH is a common entry-level bar and 15,000+ suits high-volume processing. Divide by 300 to compare with typing WPM.

How KPH is measured

KPH counts every keystroke — digits, decimal points and Enter — and divides by the time in hours. A 3-minute test is 0.05 hours, so 600 keystrokes in three minutes is 12,000 KPH. Tests such as TestGorilla’s 10-key run for two minutes, mix decimals and operators, and ask you to press Enter after each entry.

Gross vs net KPH

Gross KPH counts everything you pressed; net KPH counts only correct entries. Employers care about net — a wrong invoice amount is worse than a slow one. Our 10-key test shows both.

How to get faster

  • Home position: index on 4, middle on 5 (the raised bump), ring on 6; thumb on 0; little finger on Enter.
  • Eyes on the source: never look at the keypad.
  • Rhythm: type the whole number, then Enter, without pausing between digits.
  • Hardware: on a laptop without a keypad, use a USB keypad.
  • Practice: ten minutes a day for two weeks typically adds a few thousand KPH for beginners.

Put it on your résumé

Quote net KPH and accuracy: “10-key: 11,500 KPH, 98% accuracy”. Convert other figures with the KPH to WPM converter.

Why 10-key KPH looks bigger than typing speed

Numeric keypad strokes are short and repetitive, so a good 10-key typist presses keys faster than a good prose typist. That is why a 12,000 KPH 10-key score doesn’t mean the same thing as 40 WPM on prose, even though the arithmetic conversion is identical. Compare 10-key results with 10-key results.

A two-week 10-key plan

  1. Days 1–3: finger placement only — slow, eyes on the screen, 98%+ accuracy.
  2. Days 4–7: two-minute runs of whole numbers; aim for no misses.
  3. Days 8–11: decimals; keep the decimal on the ring finger.
  4. Days 12–14: operators and full-length mock tests on the 10-key test.

Accuracy targets

Employers rarely accept below 95% entry accuracy for numeric work, and many expect 98% or more. If your accuracy drops when you speed up, stay at the slower speed for another few days — net KPH rewards it.

Data entry quick reference

Data-entry tests measure two things: keystrokes per hour and exactness. A field or number is either right or wrong, so accuracy targets are usually 95–98% or higher.

  • Use the numeric keypad for numbers, Tab between fields and Enter to save.
  • Keep your eyes on the source document, not the keys.
  • Train on the 10-key test and the data entry test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 8,000 KPH good?

It is a common entry-level bar. 10,000–12,000 KPH is job-ready for most roles.

What is 12,000 KPH in WPM?

40 WPM (12,000 ÷ 300).

Does Enter count in KPH?

Yes, on most 10-key tests.

How long is a 10-key test?

Often 2–5 minutes; TestGorilla's is 2 minutes.
