California State Typing Certificate: Where to Get a Proctored Test
California state jobs that require typing accept a certificate only from a proctored 5-minute test showing at least 40 WPM, issued within the last four years. Unproctored online certificates and tests shorter than five minutes are rejected — so practice online, then book a supervised test.

The rule, in CalHR’s terms
CalHR’s typing certification page sets four conditions: proctored, five minutes, 40 WPM minimum, issued within four years. Classes such as Office Assistant (Typing) and Office Technician (Typing) carry the requirement, and the class specification gives the exact wording.
Where to get a proctored test
Any provider whose test meets CalHR’s requirements can issue the certificate. People commonly use adult schools, community colleges, America’s Job Center of California offices and private testing services, some of which offer virtual proctoring. Before you pay, confirm three things with the provider:
- The test is exactly five minutes (not one or three).
- It is proctored — someone verifies your identity and watches the test, in person or by webcam.
- The certificate shows your net WPM, the test length and the date.
What does not count
- Screenshots or certificates from free typing websites — including ours. They are unproctored.
- Short tests, however fast.
- Certificates older than four years.
How to prepare
Practise on the California typing test, which runs five minutes and tells you whether you clear 40 WPM. Aim for 45+ in practice, because nerves usually cost a few WPM on the day. Accuracy matters: certificates report net WPM, so every uncorrected error lowers the number.
Other states
Other state and local systems set their own rules — see the civil service typing test page for New Jersey, New York and a checklist for any state.
Which California jobs need a typing certificate?
Classes with “(Typing)” in the title are the clearest signal — for example Office Assistant (Typing) and Office Technician (Typing). The class specification on CalCareers states the requirement. Other clerical classes may not require one. If in doubt, read the job bulletin’s “Special Requirements” section.
Proctored vs unproctored, explained
A proctored test means someone confirms who you are and supervises the test, either in a room or over webcam. Without that, a certificate only proves that someone typed at that speed. That is why CalHR, and most government employers, will not accept unproctored online results.
Getting the most from the certificate
- It is valid for four years, so take it when you are at your best — not the day before an application deadline.
- Keep a PDF or scan; you will upload it to each application.
- If your score is close to 40 WPM, practice for another week and retest; a margin protects you in later applications.
A week-before checklist
- Three five-minute runs a day on the California practice test.
- Check your error words and drill them.
- Confirm the provider’s test length, proctoring method and what ID to bring.
- For virtual proctoring, test your webcam and connection the day before.
Not in California?
Federal jobs use a different standard — see the federal typing test. County and city jobs inside California may run their own tests; check each bulletin.
Before any employer or exam typing test
Five questions decide how you should prepare, so get the answers before test day. Most can be found in the job posting, the candidate information pack, or by asking the recruiter.
- How long is the test? One minute rewards a fast start; five or ten minutes rewards endurance.
- How are errors counted? Per word, per character, subtracted from WPM, or capped (for example 3 errors in 5 minutes).
- Can you use Backspace? Some platforms disable it.
- What is the content? Prose, numbers, forms, or audio.
- What keyboard? UK ISO or US ANSI — and whether there is a numeric keypad.
| Method | Used by | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Gross WPM | Some agency reports | 50 |
| Net WPM (errors per minute deducted) | Most employers | 49 |
| Adjusted WPM (WPM − errors) | Criteria-style tests | 45 |
| Error cap (≤ 3 errors) | US federal standard | Fail — 5 errors |
| Canadian table (2 errors/min at 45–54 WPM) | Canadian 5-minute test | Pass — 10 allowed |
Find the preset that matches your test on the requirements table, or use the requirement checker to compare your best score with the job.
